Installing Your Own Tankless
Water Heater

Some have said that installing a tankless hot water heater is a simple task but it is not a unanimous opinion. It depends on your familiarity with this type of project. Installing an electric is certainly easier than gas. For most the big stumbling block is doing the electrical part at the breaker panel, or even understanding what is going on at the panel.

Doing the Tankless Electrical Work

If you want to do the installation yourself consider these points:
1. Ask an electrician if you have capacity to add 80-120 amps to your panel without overload.
2. Get an estimate to do the necessary work of prepping the panel and running wire to the tankless unit.

Anything above 120 amps and chances are high that you will need a dedicated service for this heater.

Doing the Tankless Plumbing Work

The cheap (and traditional) way to plumb this job is to use lead-free solder and butane torch. For someone with a little experience, it’s a snap. My preference is to use compression fittings, they are more expensive but as simple as a snap together toy.

For a more detailed how-to, this installing a tankless heater demo will be helpful.

The advantage of doing it yourself is you gain first hand experience, something many plumbers don’t have yet, and you will save money.

You can save even more and cut down on the size heater you need by applying the benefits of passive heat to preheat water going to the tankless unit.
